When their starting pitching is hot nothing stands in the way not even the Diamondbacks. Ted Lilly put on a clinic Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field. Going deep in the game for 7 innings he fanned 10 batters while yielding a run on 3 hits and 2 walks. Lilly pushes his mark to 3-4, showing new life with a dominating performance. The 2 extras runs were enough as Alfonso Soriano untied the game in the 5th with a double down the third base line to score Reed Johnson.

Derek Lee smacked a solo homer later in the 8th to add to the lead, his 9th of the season. Kerry Wood wrapped up his 6th save giving up no hits or walks in the 9th The Cubs have 9 games left on the homestand. They're 12-5 at Wrigley with their best games coming in late innings. With Chicago holding their ground in the Central they can be in a more comfortable position after the homestand. The Padres and Pirates come into town next on the schedule. Taking those series will be a big plus. If Geovany Soto keeps on pounding the ball, adding to the .333 average, 6 homeruns, and 24 RBIs the Cubs will be in good shape. I'd like to see Cedeno in the lineup more, he's showing good patience and ability to hit tough pitches this year.
Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-53123067601748949072008-05-06T20:03:00.009-04:002008-05-06T21:33:59.150-04:00Cubs gutting out road trip The past 2 games have left the Cubs with a bitter taste in their mouth. The 5-3 losses in consecutive days again showed how the lineup failed to manufacture enough runs. It's looks bad too when the Cubs outhit their opponent 9-6 yet stranded 7 more runners on base. Soriano showed a bit of progress, striking out only once and going 1-for-4 with a run scored. If he'd learn patience at the plate he'd get good pitches in the zone.

Until then the star slugger will continue going through the motions without being productive. Dempster caught the worst end of it in yesterday's game, gunning for his 5th win instead getting shammed with 5 runs on 4 hits in 6 innings while striking out 7 batters.

Lou has to be unhappy with the way the Cubs bats responded in St. Louis. Too many RBI chances they had in the series were wasted. The starting pitching was sharp, keeping it close in every game as the middle of the order seemed to go numb. The fact that Aramis got hit in the wrist and was sidelined hurt the offense too. Carlos Zambrano deserves to get run support tonight against the Reds if he works quick innings and pitches like he did in his last outing. I've liked the work from the bullpen in the past week as well. It's up to the star sluggers to take control and bang out those runs. Hang in there and try not to get discouraged. Let's go Cubbies!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-24467066363956694292008-05-04T12:07:00.014-04:002008-05-04T14:02:19.766-04:00Fontenot, Cubs unload on CardinalsToo much talk and rumors have swirled around about the Cubs offense since Alfonso Soriano has returned. By the numbers the run production was better without him in the lineup. However, this was for a couple of weeks in April and the Cubs went on a win streak. I saw Soriano's approach at the plate in Game 1 against the Cardinals. Swinging at pitches too far off the plate and in the dirt frustrated and annoyed Cub fans. Then he hit that 2-run homer in the 9th to tie the game despite the Cubs losing in extras 4-3. The star slugger will come around and be a valuable to the lineup when he regains his hitting stroke and stays healthy.

Bouncing back from Friday's loss the Cubs came out strong driving in 9 runs to give Ted Lilly the run support he needed to record his 2nd win. Mike Fontenot cracked a 3-run shot off Kyle Lohse in the 4th, scoring Soto and DeRosa. Later he drew a bases loaded walk to give the Cubs a 9-3 lead. Ted Lilly pitched a smooth game, having things go his way pitching 7 innings and allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits and a walk. He also recorded his 1,000 career strikeout. Fukudome helped fuel the offense with 3 hits and 2 RBIs. He's been the one constant steady batter in the lineup, hope his success rubs off on everyone else on the team.

The Cubs can't get the sweep, though can take back first place in the Central with a win today. Lou seems to have his mind made up on keeping Soriano as the everyday lead-off man. I didn't have a problem with as long as Sori manages to get on base and cut down on those strikeouts. With Rich Hill being sent down to the minors the rotation will be altered a little bit, best luck to him on developing his mechanics and control. Today a good start from Jason Marquis (1-1) against Todd Wellemeyer (2-1) can enable the Cubs to take 2-of-3 in this epic road series.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-71846582692293950772008-05-02T12:40:00.008-04:002008-05-02T13:53:52.784-04:00Cubs catch bad break in 4-3 lossThe Cubs were on their way to wrapping up their second consecutive win with a 3-1 lead entering the 9th. Kerry Wood faltered, giving up a 2-run double into deep right field by Ryan Braun as the Brewers went ahead 4-3. These type of games sting a little after a 19-5 blowout the previous day. Kerry just had an unfortunate outing and has to look past it as he's been pitching quality innings in 13 relief appearances with 2-1 record. These Brewers, Cubs series always are kind of weird anyway. It's either a late inning comeback or a slaughter. Carlos Zambrano received a no-decision, which stinks yet he showcased his power stroke with his first homer of the season.

To closeout April with a 17-11 record is an improvement for the Cubs. They're normally around .500 and scuffling at home. Definitely a positive turnaround from last season's start. I like the effort from Theriot and Fukudome in the game Thursday, accounting for 7 of the 11 hits in the lineup. Eventually these two will be scoring a ton of runs for the Cubs when the offense falls in place and gets into a rhythm. I have a feeling this Cubs team will explode for several big scoring games. I'd like to see Soriano rediscover the pop this weekend with Lee and Ramirez following suit. Rich Hill will push for his second win against Adam Wainwright (3-1). Alright, Cubs LET'S GET SOME RUNS AND PULL OUT A WIN!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-58189747427839603202008-04-30T12:27:00.008-04:002008-04-30T13:40:57.486-04:00Cubs offense returns, but it's not enough to rally past Brewers Okay, the Cubs lineup took a good approach last night against the Brewers. They scored early, executing the fundamentals yet lacked the run production the rest of the game. The Mike Fontenot 3-run double in the 7th put the Cubs within 2. After that the bats went cold again. Any time Derek Lee hits a homerun (8th) it helps. The Cubs had experienced offensive shortage as of late with runners on base. Stranding 24 runners will result in a loss for most teams. Still the Cubs had chances to make a comeback in the 10-7 outcome. The travel and day/night schedule tired out the team. They'll adapt to the conditions on the road, it will take a little while.

Soriano is expected to be back on Thursday, resetting the tone at the top of the order. They his power and ability to get aboard. I don't think Reed Johnson got comfortable in the lead off spot and better suited near the bottom of the lineup. Since Lou is always experimenting why not let Soriano hit in the no. 2 hole and have either Theriot or Pie bat lead off? They both have good speed. It may be the solution to eliminating all these extra runners left on base. The top of the order will have to be productive for them to win close games.

The short road trip wasn't pleasant for the Cubs. At least they're back at home for the Brewers series. I just realized how messed up the schedule is this year. Makes no sense to play 5 games away then come back to Wrigley for only a 3-game series...what team wouldn't be weary with such crappy scheduling? With Dempster and Zambrano set to go for Game 2 and 3 the Cubs can take the series, leaving the Cub fans happy at the Friendly Confines. Then with a head of steam they can roll into St. Louis and open up a can of whoop ass! Go Cubs Go!!

Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-55509278906665905202008-04-28T11:44:00.005-04:002008-04-28T12:50:11.165-04:00Rude welcome for Cubs so far on road tripThe series with the Nationals wasn't the best showing for the Cubs offense. They dropped 2-of-3, getting shutout 2-0 on Sunday. Ted Lilly had bad luck as he hung around until the 6th inning as the lineup wasn't able to drive in runners. Too many scoring opportunities were wasted as the Cubs stranded 18 runners. As a result, Lilly falls to 1-4 hoping for run support in his next outing. Both teams had 4 hits a piece and things went the Nationals way. The Cubs did win 7-0 Saturday which put a dent in the series as Zambrano went to 4-1. Derek Lee ripped 2 hits and drove in 3 runs in that game. Going 2-3 on this road trip hasn't hurt the Cubs much in the standings.

A day off today will give the fellas time to rest and recharge their offense. The weekend may have not have been kind to the Cubs, but the good news of recent is the Cubs gaining their 10,000th win, placing 2nd all-time behind the Giants. Quite a historic accomplishment for any franchise. So many famous Cub names come to mind as relation to those victories, but most memorable in my lifetime are Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Sammy Sosa, Andre Dawson, Kerry Wood, Lee Smith, and Carlos Zambrano. Of course the old Greats: Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Hack Wilson, Milt Pappas, and Dave Kingman to name a few.

Resuming the road trip the Cubs have a 3-game bill with the Brewers where in the first game they face Ben Sheets. Definitely not the guy the Cub bats want to see after going scoreless. Sheets is off to another good start, owning a 3-0 record and 0.96 ERA. I wanted him on the Cubs like two years ago because he's just so dominating in games. The Cubs will have to fend him off the best they can on Tuesday. The other 2 games may be coin tosses if a ton of runs are scored by both clubs. Keeping a slight lead in first place before the Cardinals series may do wonders to boost clubhouse morale as the Cubs work to claim stake to the NL Central.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-76121234621728690802008-04-25T12:08:00.003-04:002008-04-25T12:39:55.012-04:00Streak ends at 6, Cubs remain in first placeThe 6-game winning streak was nice while it lasted. The Cubs took 1-of-2 from the Rockies at Coors Field as they aim to maintain their NL Central lead on the road trip. Chicago fell short 4-2 Thursday afternoon. Jason Marquis had another good outing, lasting 7 innings and yielding 2 earned runs on 8 hits. The lineup went cold tallying 4 hits. Felix Pie continues expand his game and progress as he had 2 hits and a RBI. Kevin Hart made a 1-inning appearance and was handed the loss, giving up a run in the 8th.

Changes in the rotation will have Rich Hill skipped for his next start since the Cubs have a day off on Monday. A few day-to-day injuries have hit two the Cub players. Ryan Theriot deals with lower back pain and Kosuke Fukudome may sit today due to a cyst above his right eye. Nothing major for Cubs fans to fret over. I think the Cubs are doing fine with 15-7 mark and coping well without Soriano. Finishing out April, taking the series against the Nationals and Brewers would give them a head of steam before meeting the Cardinals in a rivaled 3-game series.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-89530357379632414572008-04-23T12:09:00.008-04:002008-04-23T13:43:15.512-04:00Cubs get back-to-back sweeps, leave impression at Wrigley The Wrigleyville faithful have witnessed a glorious transition for the Cubs in their opening homestand. Ronny Cedeno busted out with another big game in the 8-1 route of the Mets yesterday. His grand slam provided ample run support behind Ted Lilly's quality 6 innings of 4-hit 1-run ball. The veteran southpaw recorded his first win. Kosuke Fukudome went 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored. Fukudomania has hit the streets in Chicago! He already has 25 hits with 16 walks and runs scored with his batting average climbing each game. The real positive point about Tuesday's win was everyone in the lineup had at least 1 hit. From a pitching standpoint the starters haven't blown leads and have kept the Cubs in most games.

Sweeping the Pirates then the Mets is a great way to start off the season at Wrigley Field. The Cubs have won 8 of their last 9 games. Aramis Ramirez cranked two homeruns in the last series to break him out of the slump. His power in the middle of the order will be needed along side Derek Lee until Soriano returns. Cedeno sure is making the most of his time at shortstop, producing 7 RBIs in 2 days. Lou may have to pencil him in as a regular starter if he keeps hitting like this. I understand why Lou was flipping the lineup and rotation around so much. He wants to find the right fit for all the talent on this club.

The schedule has definitely been favorable to the Cubs in April. With their streaky play and high confidence I don't think it matters who they play at this time. Everyone is contributing, able to execute in given game situations while showing good consistency. Chicago heads on the road to start a 2-game series at Coors Field. Rich Hill (1-0) gets start vs. the Rockies' Franklin Morales (1-1). Oh, how sweet it would be in that thin air in the mountain for the ball to sail into the bleachers again and again for the Cubs! Then again I'd settle for just a win to keep the streak alive.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-22983671600328566132008-04-21T11:40:00.009-04:002008-04-21T12:54:22.176-04:00Cubs grab first sweep at home, Ramirez smashes 2-run shot Sunday the Cub bats ripped Pirates' pitching again. Ryan Dempster looked crisp, going 5 innings to earn his 3rd win. The 13-6 romp by the Cubs included a 4-hit showing by Aramis Ramirez who hit an RBI double and followed it up in the 5th with a 2-run homer. The lineup compiled 18 hits in the game and forced Pirates starter Zack Duke out of the game after the 4th inning. The Cubs have won 5-of-6 in the homestand, a complete turnaround from last season's slow start and record at Wrigley.

I have to give it up for Ryan Theriot, who's batting .338. He's been so consistent at the plate, banging out 15-of-his 23 hits at Wrigley Field. The passionate infielder will be underestimated on the road, but cherished at home this season. Derek Lee is getting hot, serving up 2 hits and 2 RBIs against the Pirates while leading the majors with 7 homeruns. Seeing this kind of solid production on the road from the middle of the order would be awesome.

I wouldn't even have imagined Ryan Dempster being in the rotation let alone be the first Cubs pitcher to go 3-0. He seems to be settling back in as a starter. These role reversals are working magic in the early season. I think the extra at-bats pinching hitting for the young guys off the bench is great because they're getting the exposure they lacked last year. Ronny Cedeno is looking sharper at the plate and getting to start at shortstop sometimes will only enable him to grow as a player. The bench will be an influential factor to the Cubs' success.

Kerry Wood received a day to rest Sunday and watched his team improve to 12-6. The weekend sweep at home came on a day where WGN celebrated 60 years of Cubs baseball with a documentary entitled Cubs Forever. A look back on franchise history with interviews and highlights were aired. Great feature on the 1984 and '89 playoff clinching series! Cubs square off against the Mets today. The starters will be Carlos Zambrano (2-1) vs. John Maine (1-1). Do your thing Big Z!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-63322614327072465952008-04-18T12:05:00.006-04:002008-04-18T12:53:18.955-04:00Griffey long ball and Reds offense cannot be containedAiming to sweep the series the Cubs came up short yesterday and lost 9-2. Ted Lilly's struggles continue as he pitched 6 innings and allowed 5 earned runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. He caught a bad break as the Cub bats were silent for the most part. Reed Johnson slipped in 4 hits as the rest of the lineup produced just 5. Ken Griffey Jr. launched a 3-run homer in the 7th inning off Jon Lieber, who performs better as a starter. He has 2-1 record and 1.74 ERA which seems unusual for him to enter the game in relief. Unless the Cubs lacked arms in the bullpen I'd leave Lieber in the rotation and let him get his rest on off-days.

I like how the Cubs are kicking off the homestand. Winning 2-of-3 against Cincinnati showed that the offense is coming around. Derek Lee delivered with clutch hits in the last 2 series. His 6 homeruns and 13 RBIs fill the void a little with the Alfonso Soriano's absence. With a new temporary lead-off man in Mike Fontenont the Cubs must find ways to score runs early in games and cut down on stranded runners. Today they start a 3-game series with the Pirates at home. I'm looking for Ramirez to snap out of his slump soon. With the injury to Soriano the Cubs called up Eric Patterson to platoon in the outfield. The main thing now is building team chemistry and having players adapting to different roles.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-49825741134615944682008-04-16T12:20:00.012-04:002008-04-16T13:22:52.312-04:00Favorable home opener for Cubs, Soriano takes early exit Several things are working in the Cubs favor in April. Still they're trying to define themselves as a ball club in 2008. Tuesday night in Wrigley was a bittersweet game. The Cubs captured a 9-5 win behind 14 hits. As usual though a freak incident occurred. Alfonso Soriano appeared to have a routine fly ball caught without a problem yet came up hopping after the play with a strained right calf. Leaving the game in the first inning really caused a scare for Cubs fans.

This sucks, but the Cubs will cope without his bat in the lineup as they've done in the past. I want to see Soriano have a full recovery and come back strong. Derek Lee and Mark DeRosa socked homers and accounted for 6 runs. Dusty Baker had to watch his new team fall to 6-8 and struggle to drive in runs. The wind played a factor as usual and worked to the Cubs advantage this time. A sweep to kick off the opening home series would be great!

Ryan Dempster came the bullpen a break pitching 6 innings and earning a 2-0 mark. I didn't see him as a regular starter, though he's adjusting well in the new role. Kerry Wood pitched the 9th in a non-save opportunity and was flawless while striking out a batter. I know this will one of the wackiest seasons in Cubs history and maybe even in MLB history. Ken Griffey Jr. added to baseball history with his 595th career homerun in the 3rd inning. Coaches want to utilize as much as their roster as possible in games. Lou Piniella's experience as coach with the Mariners, Devil Rays, and Reds will enlighten him as to what works or what doesn't in games for the Cubs. I like the idea of using the bench with Cedeno, Ward, and Fontenot coming in as pinch hitters or sometimes defensive replacements. Lou will determine when this strategy becomes too excessive.

The 8-5 record is a good start for the Cubs. Derek Lee right now, the hottest hitter on the club at .368 will be expected to lead the offense. Fukudome has much unraveled talent and is on the verge having breakout performances. The talent is so widespread now the managerial staff is working to effectively disperse players in given key situations. The starting pitching for the Reds and Cubs will be tested again. Tonight Carlos Zambrano (1-1) takes the mound against Josh Fogg (1-1). Both are known for going long innings as the right-handers push for their 2nd win.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-65664301011369621422008-04-11T14:13:00.010-04:002008-04-11T15:25:28.604-04:00Cubs sweep Pirates, Fontenot and Soto deliver with big batsSeeing last night's game on TV was kind of different than usual. The Cubs did go through rough patches in the game, but went on to win 7-3 at PNC Park. Sweeping the Pirates early in the season showed how strong they are as a club. To experiment with the bench players was risky yet it paid off. I'm not advocating that all the players on the bench and bullpen will always make the difference though will be valuable in their normal reserve roles. Sure Rich Hill struggled with his control and Jon Lieber replaced him in the 4th inning. He's proven to be a strikeout pitcher at such a young age. I felt he got cheated out of wins last season, but that's in the past. Lou will put together a set rotation when he decides how who are the 5 best starters.

The 11 hits were spread out in the lineup which is good because there is no team nucleus that can save the Cubs this season. I know it's going to take a team effort, not every game though when the sluggers like Lee, Ramirez, and Soriano have off games. Going through slumps is just part of the game and players break out with big games. I root for the Cubs because I truly feel a connection, understanding their struggles and frustration. If I didn't care about this awesome team why would I still be honoring and supporting them on my blog? All these years of torture for the Cubs and their fans has to end.

Soto and Fontenot had breakout performances and there is a reason for their unexpected offensive production. Of course they want to play as much as they're allowed. These guys are willing to do whatever it takes to contribute. Therefore, the Cubs have the pool of talent to be successful in 2008 and years to come. Having starters jerked from the mound early too often, seeing the wrong guys laying down bunts, taking chances stealing bases, and appearing to be loafing in the outfield seems crazy yet will work itself out somehow. It's part of the plan of the season until things are clearer and make sense. The Phillies and Cubs hook up Saturday. Zambrano (1-0) and Bret Myers (0-1) are the probable starters. The game may be a real corker.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-78267637310361301972008-04-07T19:20:00.007-04:002008-04-11T16:04:08.238-04:00Cubs start off season with 4-3 mark I've been away for a while and have yet to post any comments on the new season until now. I never give up on the Chicago Cubs. In my eyes this team is the greatest! Die-heart fans truly believe this because they won't ever give up on the Cubbies either. From what I've seen already the roster is packed with talent, more diverse than ever. That's right bench players will get the true recognition they deserve and fill bigger roles than in the past. Things will have to work themselves out with the rotation and bullpen. Even though everything seems crazy that the players and Sweet Lou does such unorthodox fundamentals actually can work for the Cubs.

Hear other notes and quips about the Cubs at: http://vineline.mlblogs.com/

Pittsburgh and the Cubs duked it out today as the game went into extra innings. Since I wasn't able to see the game I know this team has the heart and spirit to win the close games and pull off miracles. Sure no one in the lineup hit exceptionally well today, but Fukudome is a great piece to the puzzle for this long struggling team. The newcomer went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ronnie Cedeno and Geovanny Soto came out swinging and accounted for part of 13 hits. The rest of lineup, the veterans especially will regain their strokes at the plate. Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez still will deliver with their power hitting. Alfonso Soriano's versatility will be a great strength for the Cubs. He had a great season in 2007 and is truly a clutch hitter.

The franchise has experienced so many highs and lows in their history they know how to endure every obstacle in their path. Every Cub fan believes in them. Lou likes to shake things up in the lineup and eventually he will have a set order. Everyone heard Lou Piniella said he'd retire after the season...he's the right coach to lead the franchise to the World Series and win it!! All the players believe in their hearts and that's all that matters for now. Keep on fighting in the NL because you Cubbies can do it!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-56279841566414917802008-02-29T14:02:00.004-05:002008-04-11T16:12:17.978-04:00Cubs ready for Spring Training, Soto aims to earn role as starting catcherNot much has happened since the last post I wrote here. Spring Training action is underway as the Cubs breezed past the Giants 12-6 in their first game. Just so the young guys get their time on the field and work on fundamentals, that's all that matters at this point. Of course it been a rough week for Mark DeRosa after being emitted to the hospital due to an irregular heart beat. He's back with the team and seems to be okay though. Lou is still pondering how to arrange the starting lineup by Opening Day. Lee, Soriano, and Ramirez will get their share of hacks in Spring Training and at the same time stay in good shape.

I've heard the Cubs are still trying to pursue Brian Roberts. He may be a nice fit over at second base, but I'd like to see Cedeno and Theriot can more playing time on the infield. They're both good hitters and will only become better with extended at-bats. It looks like the Cubs are doing fine for the start up of the Catcus League. Season tickets have already been released for sale and I can't wait to see what Interleague opponents they'll face in the schedule. Opening is only a month away!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-2817769244880330132008-01-21T12:20:00.000-05:002008-01-21T12:44:23.963-05:00Franchise not expected to be sold by season opener, other signingsThe Cubs seem to be taking it easy this off-season. The owners are in no rush to sell the team. For a while Mark Cuban was interested, but that has fell by the wayside. A few other investors have shown a spark of interest, but no deals have materialized. I'm just glad to see Cubs management being active and thinking with open minds even though when they don't make the best decisions. Since taking my mind off baseball the Cubs have signed Jon Lieber to a 1-year contract and another foreign player in reliever Shingo Takatsu from the WhiteSox. Kinda like the Lieber signing, usually a reliable guy to have in the rotation.

Sure the Cubs can always use a extra pitcher in the pen, but the main concentration by Cubs management ought to be hitting. I can't reiterate this enough, the Cubs can't have enough HITTING! It takes an idiot not to recognize the lack of production after witnessing the 2007 playoffs. Yeah, luck was just not on the Cubs side. Rather the Cubs had scoring droughts all throughout last season and showed no consistently at the plate. If they didn't hit homeruns sometimes they didn't score in games. Cub GM Jim Hendry better start admitting to their deficiencies and continue to make strides to reshaping the franchise. Management has until March to execute smart deals.Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-46596044616964016092007-12-17T12:19:00.000-05:002007-12-17T12:50:11.645-05:00Cubs depart ways with Prior, excited about FukudomeAfter dealing with the prolonged injures from a span of 2 years the Cubs have cut ties with Mark Prior. All along I thought it would be Kerry Wood making an exit, but that wasn't the case. Cubs management is staying busy this off-season signing new players and renewing contracts. The big acquisition so far has been Japanese player Kosuke Fukudome. Jim Hendry decided to shell out the big bucks for 30-year-old outfielder, signing him to a 4-year $48 million contract. I'd take this as good news for Cubs fans compared to the steroids report in MLB.

Thankfully none of the current Cubs players on the roster were noted on the steroids list prepared by Senator George Mitchell. This isn't to say a couple former Cubs didn't surface in the 409-page report. The Cubs can take their mind off the investigation since no one within the organization has been linked to steriods use, distribution, etc. Another contract renewal was granted recently as the Cubs signed Neal Cotts to a 1-year deal worth $800,000.

Let's just hope as Cubs fans none of the relievers on the roster get the urge to try anabolic steroids or HGH. With the whirlwind fuss the Mitchell report has created it may not be a problem. I just want to see Hendry execute smart deals this off-season. From an offensive standpoint there is always room for improvement. Keep up the good work and don't start getting chincy again Hendry!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-12734295753009606162007-11-26T13:45:00.001-05:002008-04-25T13:35:19.434-04:00Cubs interested in Kaz Matsui instead of real talentYes, it's been a while since I've updated this page and for good reason. Dealing with the postseason outcome was too infuriating. Now months later I think I'm over it. Well, the Cubs are up to their old tricks and cheap-spending tactics again or so it seems. Rumor has it management is considering offering a deal to Kaz Matsui. Again, I understand where this is going. The infielder had a few hits in the playoffs and now the geniuses operating the franchise think he's a good candidate to replace someone on the infield. Dead wrong as usual fellas, this guy will only be taking up space and be useless from an offensive standpoint.

Also, word has been going around whether Kerry will stick around or not. At this point I don't see what real difference it will make. I like him in the bullpen as long as he pitches an inning or so, but he has nothing to do with the offensive shortages plaquing this franchise. Will when old nobhead Hendry realize this? How many freaking years will it take for him to get the DAMN message?? Cub fans want to see smart deals going down and not constantly hearing what crummy players management has in mind for the 2008 team. Forget about Kaz and concentrate on the high-market players, the only real logical investments!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-23160676107071405502007-10-08T11:38:00.000-04:002007-11-13T21:29:29.741-05:00It was fun while it lasted...so long to a promising yearThe outcome of the 2007 season was inevitable for the Chicago Cubs. The regular season games were fun to watch as well as witness the Cubs win the NL Central. Playoff celebrations weren't in order though this year (as with numerous desolate past seasons). I'm not that surprised this team couldn't reach the second round yet how they let the D-backs sweep them I can't fathom. Inconsistent offense has plagued the 2007 club all year so the inefficiencies at the plate should have been expected. A younger, talented hungry team got the best of them in Game 1 in my opinion.

Taking the wind out of their sails, the D-backs had nothing to fear or worry about in the series. When Zambrano was pulled from Game 1 after tossing 85 pitches that effected the rest of division series. Like I said before he definitely earned a win, but didn't receive a chance to get a decision. Everyone is questioning Lou for his decision and they have that right. Sure old Lou wanted to rest Carlos to make a start in a possible Game 4 (of course that didn't happen), but he also knew the Cubs ace was in the 'zone.' Besides that the lineup didn't produce squat for Z or the rest of the starters in the series. As the legendary Harry Carey used to say on the air, "You can't win without scoring runs no matter how good your pitching holds up."

As a century of desolation rolls around now I can only imagine the utter torment Chicago baseball historians and die-heart fans are going through as well as the number of times Harry Carey is rolling over in his grave. It's a damn freaking shame the Cubs failed to even notch 1 victory in the division series. After the second loss in Arizona it was already over. Witnessing the failed scoring chances with the spine-chilling double plays the Cubs hit into and the numerous stranded runners on base was so excruciating...it was like having a knife plunged into your gut as a Cub's fan.

I hear all the time how teams are motivated to excel and reach the highest level of goals. For the Cubs I don't know what the hell it's going to take to drive them...a championship drought of 99 years and counting ought to be ENOUGH!! What astonishes me is no matter how awful the franchise plays or lets down the city the fans sell out Wrigley Field. Nothing results in being bittersweet for them it's always just bitter. Okay the Cubs did win the Central, but what loyal Cub fans are actually happy with that? I guess with the Phillies and Angels getting sweep it takes a little less attention off the Cubs. Then again what do their fans know about misery they haven't waited a WHOLE DAMN CENTURY for a World Series title! Forget about 'wait 'til next year and just postpone the 2008 season for as long as they can find a way to manifest a miracle!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-50292709857139384262007-10-05T12:56:00.000-04:002007-10-05T13:47:55.294-04:00Cubs in a hole, down 0-2 with little breathing roomGetting all hopes up as a Cubs fan usually is a waste of time. I knew this 07 Cubs team was lucky to enter the playoffs considering how inconsistent their offense was all year long. This aspect of their game haunted them last night in Arizona. Heading back to Chicago they're facing elimination, down 0-2 after last night's 8-4 loss. As mentioned by the TBS broadcasters covering the game the Cubs seemed to have underestimated the D-backs. Then again most of their lineup is filled with virtual unknowns and who would've expected the Arizona bullpen to hold leads so well.

During crunch time the Cub bats have gone silent for the most part in this series. Zambrano did a heck of job in Game 1 and when he left the game in the 7th the Cubs still didn't provide any run support for him. He definitely should've won that game instead of seeing it slip away and the Cubs being defeated 3-1. As a continuation from the regular season the Cubs lineup is leaving way too many runners on base. This has caused them to have forced their backs against the wall and must win 3 consecutive games in order to advance to the second round.

Ted Lilly had nothing working in his favor Thursday night and only pitched 4 innings, yielding 6 runs in the process. Giovanni Soto did crack a 2-run homer in the early innings to give the starter a lead, but after that the batting order failed to scratch another run home until the 7th or 8th with a pinch-hit 2-run double by Daryl Ward. That has to be frustrating for a pitcher, who constantly must be reminded of the score or have it on his mind. Game 1 was a great pitcher's duel between Zambrano and Webb. Unfortunately, Webb gained a few insurance runs from his teammates in the 8th inning. I'm still wondering though why Lou pulled Carlos from the game so soon as he only reached around a 85-pitch count...not sure what the conversation was like on the mound.

The Cubs face more than an uphill battle returning to Wrigley Field for Game 3 and possibly Game 4. Unable to score sufficient runs (with this type of lineup it's unbelievable) pulling off a miracle is what it's going to take. Heck, even last night the D-backs were allowing them to get back in the game when Ojeda bobbled a toss to turn a double-play in the 9th. That left runners on first and second with 1 out. Lee and Ramirez were 1-for-9 in the game and both struck out in their final at-bats. There is no way the Cubs will survive at home if both sluggers duplicate this offensive breakdown.

*As a special feature link for the playoffs Cub fans check out Mark DeRosa's blog and read his thoughts and opinions on the division series.

I'm also a little bothered with the starters for Game 3. Jason Marquis ought to be starting rather than Rich Hill against Livan Hernandez. I know experience hasn't been much of a factor so far, but I like the chances better with veteran vs. veteran. It just makes more sense to me. However, if the lineup doesn't produce enough runs it won't matter who starts Game 3. Winning a low scoring one-run game most likely isn't in the cards for the Cubs. With today off I can only imagine what the players are thinking. I'd like to see a bolt of electricity charge those darn bats (more wishful thinking) or the guys in blue get a surge of adrenaline and ride the momentum. Fight, fight, fight Cubs the crowd is fully behind you at Wrigley! Let's get a win!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-44841991389415392882007-10-01T14:36:00.000-04:002007-11-14T13:55:02.555-05:00Cubs set to face D-backs in division playoff series

The playoff matchups are almost all set for October. The only two NL teams laying in wake of a postseason birth are Colorado and San Diego, who square in a tie-breaker for the wildcard. It's been memorable season with several high and lows for the Cubs. A week ago I didn't know if they'd survive and clinch then the champagne celebration erupted in clubhouse after finding out they won the pennant. They lost their season finale 8-4 in Cincy, but all anyone cares about is they're headed to the playoffs.

With the worst record coming into the postseason the Cubs have their work cut out for them. They'll play the D-backs in Arizona for Game 1 and 2. Zambrano and Lilly will start for these contests. Power will be a huge asset for the Cubs. They need it to win the series I think. Soriano made an impact in September with 14 homeruns. He leads the team with the most homeruns (33). He's served as a spark plug and motivator in the lead-off role. When he returned to the team late in the season his energy seemed to rub off on his teammates and effect their overall play.

Let's not forget about D. Lee and Ramirez and how steady their bats have been all year. Both have hit over .300 with at least 22 homeruns a piece. Aramis is the team leader in RBIs with 101. Run production from them is also crucial. The guys on the bench like Floyd, Ward, Cedeno, and Pie will be called upon to deliver in clutch pinch hitting roles, defensive purposes, and potential sacrifice bunt or hit and run situations. Everyone has to be on their toes especially the bullpen where holding leads could mean the difference in winning the series. Game 1 of the division series starts Wednesday night in Arizona. You'd be crazy to miss it!
Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-11074768659362118172007-09-29T12:48:00.001-04:002008-04-11T16:07:14.385-04:00Cubs clinch division, hooray, hooray! What a sigh of relief for Cub fans! The playoffs are no doubt in the Cubs' horizon. With a 6-0 shutout behind a pure gem by Carlos Zambrano the Cubs clinched the NL Central. To my surprise it only took 84 wins to wrap up the NL Central. Thanks in part to the Brewers' loss against the Padres last night it put the Cubs up 3 games, knocking the opposition out of playoff contention. I was starting to worry until they pulled off the victory, it appeared as if the division race would be decided in the last 2 games of the regular season. I'm sure glad that wasn't the case.

As far as the historic game, it was pertinent the offense delivered. That's what happened as both D. Lee and Soriano crushed homeruns while the rest of the lineup chipped in with clutch hits. This veteran bench and youthful mix of talent on the club is one of their top strengths. All that's on anyone's mind involved or following this franchise is they're headed to the postseason, oh yeah! This will mark the 3rd time in 7 years the Cubs will make a playoff appearance (Still can't get over the 1989 series against the Giants). The fellas can relax now and start to prepare for the intense action awaiting them this October.

My gut instinct told me Carlos Zambrano would bring his A game and steer this club in the right direction again. He went on to notch up his 18th win. Howry and Dempster combined for 2 scoreless innings Friday night allowing just 2 hits. These two final games with the Reds look to be a breeze now that the Cubs have clinched the playoffs. Lou should be given a lot of credit for his role in getting his team to be play with a boost in confidence. Can't wait until the postseason to catch the thrilling action. Congratulations to the 2007 Chicago Cubs on becoming NL Central Champions! Way to go!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-21778095938793977212007-09-28T12:10:00.004-04:002008-04-25T13:10:57.456-04:00Nothing but bad luck for Cubs in FloridaThe final road trip has looked real grim for the Cubs. They couldn't even grab one game against the Marlins. That's weights so heavily on the pennant race in the Central. I don't understand why this franchise has such bad luck against the Marlins. Ted Lilly had yet to win a game against them in his career coming into the series and the offense again has struggled. What happened to the pop of those bats which were booming about a week ago? Steve Traschel who pitched just 4.1 innings in his Thursday afternoon start hasn't shown good stuff on the mound since joining the team. Giving up 5 runs put the Cubs in a pressure situation and seemed to make them too anxious.

*Hey fans be sure to visit Northside Lounge for more news, opinions, Cub updates, and links.

Ramirez and Soriano combined for 6 hits, but no one else much could get on base ahead of them. When guys swing too early in the count and ground into double plays like yesterday momentum is halted and it takes a team right out of an inning. The 10 hits from the lineup were irrelevant since the Cubs stranded 10 runners on base. This club has experienced offensive shortages for periods off and on throughout the season. If they truly want to win the pennant they MUST succeed on scoring opportunities. Otherwise they'll continue to work themselves into jams and find themselves trailing.

All the Cubs have to do is win 2 games to reach the playoffs. That's easier said than done. I can't believe they let the Marlins sweep them. They can't allow the Reds to give them the same trouble. There is no need to rush or go into panic mode in this final series. Big Z takes the mound today in Cincy against Bronson Arroyo. The Cubs ace will be fired up! I'd like to see at least a 4-5 run support for him. Once Zambrano get confident it's hard to stop him. Come on guys in blue, don't give up you're almost there. Just win two games, go Cubs!!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-57948599221153125962007-09-26T13:57:00.001-04:002008-04-25T13:17:41.641-04:00Willis, Marlins slide past Cubs 4-2Extending the winning streak would have been great. Dontrelle Willis, however didn't let that occur Tuesday night in Florida as he pitched 8 innings dealing hard against the Cubs lineup. Ted Lilly was 0-4 coming into the game against the Marlins and was credited with all 4 earned runs. The southpaw went 5 innings allowing 8 hits and a walk. The Cubs were held to 3 hits. Their offense came from a 2-run homer by Craig Monroe.

I was afraid the Cubs may get too relaxed now after viewing the NL Central standings. The Brewers are 2 games back at the moment with a victory last night. The recent hitting outburst needs to resume tonight in Game 2 of the series because so much is still riding on these final 5 games. Usually this Cubs team scores most of their runs on the long ball, but timely hitting and execution is necessary for them to take the road series in Florida.

Coming off a good start Jason Marquis (12-8) is called upon to lead the Cubs to a win. I expect for him to go 5-7 innings. D. Lee and Soriano must keep pounding away and drive in those crucial runs. Look for Theriot to be a spark plug near the top of the order with influential bench hitting spots from Cliff Floyd, Daryl Ward, or Felix Pie. The odds are in favor of the Cubs yet they can't get lazy! Coral those Fish and take 2-of-3 before traveling to Cincy! Go Cubs Go!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-70192428441941507152007-09-24T12:58:00.001-04:002008-04-25T12:50:19.885-04:00Zambrano shuts out Pirates as Cubs gain extra groundThanks in part to a masterful pitching showcase by Carlos Zambrano the Cubs sailed to a 8-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Wrigley. Derek Lee and Ronnie Cedeno generated most of the offensive firepower, each smacking 2-run homers. They extended their division lead to 3.5 games over Milwaukee. With only 6 remaining games on the schedule the Cubs are inching ever so close to capturing the pennant. Zambrano regained his natural form with 6 innings of shutout ball, allowing 3 hits and 3 walks. He left the game in the 7th due to cramping with a big lead, which stayed intact and collected his 17th win.

Derek Lee had a big game with 2 hits and 3 RBIs while the lineup accumulated 14 hits. 5 players had at least 2 hits a piece. With the sweep to close out the home series finale the Cubs have their eyes set on the playoffs. First they have to take care of the Marlins and Reds to finish the season out on the road. All the Cubs have to do is concentrate on staying ahead of the Brewers. Things keep looking better and better for a franchise who has come up short of a world title for damn near a century. With Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez hot nothing will stand in this new Cub team's way.

I have to give Kerry Wood much credit in what he accomplished yesterday by pitching 2 innings late without giving up a hit or run! This guy had a rough, up hill battle in the last couple of years and it's good to see him become a significant contributing part of this club again. The off-day today will give the bullpen and the lineup rest before they start their 3-game series in Florida. Seeing the Cubs take the series and end up clinching the pennant will be a huge weight lifted off their shoulders.

Then after the celebration in Chicago they can relax a little before charging into the playoffs. From there the atmosphere will be electric, but the competition will be fierce with nothing coming easy their way. Keep those bats warm and ready to strike guys. Those rotten Cardinals are out of sight so no worries there. Take care of business in Florida and Cincy and bring home the PENNANT! WOOOOOOOO! GO CUBS!!Pete Harveyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244146801174434996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13103544.post-2851904205631364262007-09-19T13:27:00.001-04:002008-04-25T12:48:42.704-04:005-2 loss at Wrigley ties Cubs with BrewersI know a minor setback isn't worth worrying over. Yet as a Cub fan one flaw or spell of misfortune is potentially hazardous for the remainder of the year. This 2007 club is different from all the rest in the past. Yes, they've struggled and been inconsistent, but somehow managed to pull together and fight their battles. Last night a win was not in the cards however, as Zambrano couldn't rediscover his magic, pitching just 5.1 innings while serving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks in route to the 5-2 loss. I don't expect Z to pull off stellar performances back-to-back. He's got to settle down and get the command on his pitches like he had earlier in the season.

Jacque Jones slapped a 2-run single through the infield in the 4th for the allotted offense Tuesday night. The guys in blue couldn't make a repeat comeback as they did the previous night at Wrigley. Now they are tied again with the Brewers atop the Central, who seem to be hitting the daylights out of the baseball with Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, and Geoff Jenkins on a tear. The Cubs have no more games with Milwaukee as 10 games remain on the schedule. If the Brewers get hot it's going to be a major problem. Two sweeps in a row would have really helped the Cubs on the road.

Maintaining their stride and pushing for a win streak is in their best interest. Scheduled for upcoming starts are Lilly (15-7), Marquis (12-8), and Hill (9-8). The trio has pressure riding on them, but if they focus and buckle down the Cubs will be okay. I can't believe this Cubs team hasn't won over 80 games already. This will be a big factor in the final series against Cincy. Tonight Ted Lilly should be ready and able to give his team a solid 6 innings or more in route to a win (fingers crossed).

P.S.
